Our Work
Overview
Since 2003, Human For Human (H4H) has been working across Iraq to address the complex humanitarian and development challenges resulting from decades of conflict, instability, and economic hardship. These challenges have significantly affected communities through weakened public services, high levels of unemployment and poverty, displacement, and limited opportunities for sustainable development, increasing the vulnerability of the country’s most at-risk populations.
Why is Iraq a Fragile Setting?+
Iraq continues to face cumulative challenges stemming from decades of wars, armed conflict, terrorism, and displacement, which have severely affected infrastructure, public institutions, and social cohesion. Although security and economic conditions have improved in recent years, many communities continue to experience inadequate access to basic services, limited livelihood opportunities, and unequal development across governorates. In addition, challenges related to displacement, return, and reintegration continue to affect social stability and community resilience.
Young people and women remain among the most affected groups, facing significant barriers to education, employment, and meaningful participation in community life. The legacy of conflict has also impacted trust between communities and institutions, highlighting the need for long-term interventions that promote social cohesion, resilience, and sustainable development.

What Are Our Teams Seeing on the Ground?+
Through its extensive field presence across multiple governorates, Human For Human observes that many communities continue to require long-term investments that support stability, resilience, and inclusive development. Field assessments consistently identify youth unemployment, limited economic opportunities, inadequate public services, social exclusion, and reintegration challenges as key factors affecting community well-being and long-term stability.
Communities also continue to emphasize the importance of integrated programmes that combine economic empowerment, social cohesion, community participation, and institutional capacity strengthening to create sustainable and locally owned solutions.
“We believe that communities possess the capacity to drive positive change when provided with the right opportunities, resources, and support. Our work focuses on empowering local actors, strengthening resilience, and enabling communities to actively contribute to sustainable peace and development.”
